Beyond The Classroom
In addition to providing outstanding academic opportunities, YKOM offers a robust array of learning experiences that range from related services to extra-curricular activities, to meaningful encounters in New York City.
Learning experiences that supplement our regular academics includes science fairs, geography and spelling bees, poetry sidewalk slams, “Shark Tank” STEM days, and debates. Our expansive offerings of extra-curricular opportunities are representative of our holistic philosophy when it comes to nurturing a child’s self-confidence and belief in their potential.
As YKOM is situated in the heart of bustling New York City, we continuously extend the walls of our school to our immediate surroundings to provide our students with unparalleled educational experiences. By taking advantage of the museums, arts and dynamic cultural scenes that characterize our vibrant city, our students are privileged to be able to enrich their regular classroom learning in diverse and unique ways that encourage them to become citizens of the world during their most formative years.
Our focus on physical education is to build a life long appreciation of physical fitness, health and wellness. Foundation skills and techniques are developed around sports related activities. Students are nurtured to develop these skills alongside the primary interpersonal skills of teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, courage and determination.
An essential part of our physical education curriculum is teaching sportsmanship. While we enjoy seeing our students excel at sports and achieve individual athletics goals for themselves, what’s of more critical importance to us is that they treat their fellow athletes with fairness and respect and are gracious whether they win or lose.
We offer a wide range of extracurricular sports and programming including soccer, football, rugby, chess, robotics, Lego, choir, music, and art. Through physical education and athletics on our expansive outdoor grounds, our students are afforded opportunities to build confidence, inspire teamwork, develop an active consciousness of their health, and grow individually. Artistic expression is a cornerstone of our academic philosophy, cultivating creativity, innovative thought, and extraordinary opportunities for self-discovery.
With such a dynamic urban landscape as our backdrop, New York City has become an extension of our campus. Some of our trips require us to look no further than our own backyard. A social studies class will take a short walk up Riverside Drive to view battlefields of the Revolutionary War and record their experiences on walking maps of Washington’s footpath. In planning a class garden for their science class, students walk to the Hudson River for soil samples to test for PH balance. We take full advantage of all the city has to offer by visiting many renowned museums and institutions, including The Museum of the City of New York, MoMath, New York Historical Society, New York Hall of Science, New York City Fire Museum, and The United Nations, among others. Our students are regularly exposed to diverse cultural experiences to enhance their education and make the subjects they are learning in class more relevant to their everyday lives.
